Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task we had to film a continuity task which involved filming and editing someone opening a door, walking into a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, also there had to be short dialogue between them. For this task we had to include shot-reverse-shot, 180 degree rule and match on action.

Once we filmed, as a group we edited our preliminary using 'iMovie' and then evaluated what we thought was the positive and negatives of our film. This then helped us to realised the aspect which we need to work on for our own horror film which would therefore help us to get the best grade possible.

After evaluating our film we realised that our framing wasn't very good and off key, our angle was slightly tilted and didn't incorporate the rule of thirds. Also we found that the hand held camera work we did needed to addressed, as a lot of them shots were very shaky.

On the other hand, the positives of our preliminary task were that we done some good close-up shots and had good zoom movements, these will all become useful because when we come to film our opening we could incorporate them in.

Doing this task has allowed us to consider all the depth we need to go into when we come to our film; camera shot/movement, framing and mise en scene, we'll have to think about all these to succeed within making our horror film opening.

Institutional Context

We had to create a case study for an Institutional context guide that we are working in. We decided to focus on the Lionsgate media institution as it has had represented many successful horror films which include: Saw and American Psycho, both of which were very popular on our audience questionnaire. Once we discovered this we thought that Lionsgate would be a good institution to work with for our horror film opening.
We done a lot of research on Lionsgate, its distribution and production element, where it was founded, what other media companies it owns and if that was relevant to our film opening. There are a few slides from our powerpoint presentation below.
